I'm not terribly crafty but the Schultüten ideas at Bastel-tipps.de look so cute and easy, I might just try a couple for my kids. They can be as simple or as elaborate as you like - it's common to see German youngsters with Schultüten almost as big as themselves!

I've made them for my kids for the past few years. For little kids, a brown paper bag with a photocopy of a schultuete to color works fine. I saved the big schultuete for the first day of Kindergarten and first grade. They are fun to make and personalize for your kids. I filled them with little things for school - erasers, pencil sharpeners, a small notebook, pencils, etc.
